The platforms set the clock

What this means for operators

Response time is a ranking input, not a courtesy. A message left overnight costs search placement and Superhost status, so the inbox has to answer at three in the morning as fast as at three in the afternoon.

  • Platform policy

    90%

Airbnb requires Superhosts to respond to 90% of new messages within 24 hours.

Respond to 90% of new messages, and accept or decline new reservation requests, within 24 hours
Airbnb, What's required to be a Superhost (Help Center article 829)

Undated live help page (current at retrieval) · Read 23 September 2026

Scope: Applies to the listing owner of a home listing; performance is assessed quarterly over the past 12 months. Co-hosts are not evaluated for Superhost status.

  • Platform policy

    24 h

Airbnb counts a reply as on time only if it lands within 24 hours, measured over the past 30 days, and says response rate affects search placement.

It's most important to focus on your response rate, which impacts your Superhost status and search placement. [...] Your response rate is the percentage of new inquiries and reservation requests you responded to within 24 hours in the past 30 days.
Airbnb, Improve your response rate and response time (Help Center article 430)

Undated live help page (current at retrieval) · Read 23 September 2026

Scope: The listing-page response rate uses a 30-day window; the Superhost response rate uses the first reply to each new thread over 12 months. Declining a request counts as a response; letting it expire does not.

  • Platform policy

    4.8

Airbnb Superhosts must hold a 4.8+ overall rating and a cancellation rate below 1%.

Hosted at least 10 reservations, or 3 reservations that total at least 100 nights [...] Maintained a less than 1% cancellation rate, with exceptions for cancellations due to Major Disruptive Events or other valid reasons [...] Maintained a 4.8 or higher overall rating
Airbnb, What's required to be a Superhost (Help Center article 829)

Undated live help page (current at retrieval) · Read 23 September 2026

Scope: Program criteria for listing owners; Airbnb may also withhold status for high review-removal or host-cancellation rates.

  • Platform policy

    14 days

Airbnb reviews run on a 14-day window: a review counts once both sides submit, or when the 14 days are up.

A review counts towards Superhost status when either both the guest and the host have submitted a review, or the 14-day window for reviews is over, whichever comes first.
Airbnb, What's required to be a Superhost (Help Center article 829)

  • Platform policy

    36 months

Since January 2025 Booking.com weights recent reviews more heavily in the review score; reviews stay on the page for 36 months.

As of January 2025, we use a weighted score calculation, which gives more weight to the most recent reviews you receive. [...] Reviews stay on your reviews page for 36 months.

Ratings are high, and communication moves them

What this means for operators

When almost every listing sits at 4.5 stars or above, the difference is made in what guests remember, and seven in ten say host communication is part of it.

  • Academic

    94%

94% of Airbnb properties had an average rating of 4.5 or 5 stars in 2015, and 91% in 2018.

Guests arrive from abroad, on messaging apps

What this means for operators

Most platform nights in Norway are spent by international guests, and nine in ten Norwegians already use messaging apps. An inbox that answers in one language, on one channel, misses both.

AI is becoming the default in guest messaging

What this means for operators

Airbnb now resolves close to half of the support issues its assistant starts without a person, and guest communication is hosts’ leading AI use. Norwegian hospitality still trails other industries: that is the gap.
